The return trip

1 Citation
I left off yesterday just as we were rounding the corner into McNally Bay. With the sun now behind us, you could see some reflective spots on the ice surface. It turned out, when we got closer, that these were the most gloriously smooth patches of ice on the whole lake. Evidently the water had pooled in these spots, and with no underlying snow to texture the ice surface it had flattened out like glass. Toward the north end of the bay I noticed this pattern in the snow. The north side of, technorati.com

Biogenic C13 Cult Shot Down Yet Again

1 Citation
Another article reiterating that C13 isotope depletion is not a biomarker: Controversy Over World?s Oldest Traces Of Life. Research carried out in 1996 argued that a five metre wide outcrop of rock on the island contained graphite with depleted levels of 13C. Carbon isotopes are frequently used to search for evidence of early life, because the lightest form of carbon, 12C (atomic weight 12), is preferred in biological processes as it requires less energy to be used by organisms. Two quick things

The Joker ( Feralia jocosa ) We?ve been having internet issues the last couple of days. The satellite internet we use has a daily transfer limit on the amount of information you can up- or download, and we went over. It?s not a very high limit, and a bit of unusual high-bandwidth activity can and usually does push us over the top. I think the other day it was because I was accessing a lot of photo-heavy moth identification websites as I was working on some stuff for the guide. Whatever the rea, technorati.com

Paintbrush to paper

1 Citation
I have many different projects on the go. They form a combination of writing and illustration, a lot of computer work and a bit of creative hands-on. The great thing about this is that there?s always something different to turn to if you get bored of one project or need to take a break. The downside to this is it?s easy for something, which perhaps doesn?t have an imminent deadline, to be put on the backburner for a while. Such was the case with the paintings I?m supposed to be doing. In fact, i, technorati.com

Back on the blades

1 Citation
Yesterday was such a nice day that Dan and I decided to take Raven and go out on the lake for a skate. The warm weather last week had melted down the snow on the ice surface and smoothed it all out, so the lake was snow-free and relatively smooth, perfect for skating, something we hadn?t done since before Christmas. Despite that we?d had a few days of above freezing, though, the ice was too thick to melt enough to be a concern. A couple weeks ago our neighbour measured it at 23? Heat Stress

1 Citation
Temperatures above the optimum for turfgrass growth can induce both indirect and direct injury. Heat injury is reflective in both morphological and physiological changes of the plant. Deadlines

1 Citation
Ever thought about that word, deadlines? Dead lines? Is it that the line itself is dead? Or that your death is somehow connected to the line? Before the line that is dead, you are alive, after the line, you are dead, because you didn?t make your deadline. Actually, according to Wiktionary.com (I love Wikipedia and its spinoffs), the understanding of a deadline as a due date comes from journalism, which in turn adopted it from printing, going back to the days of the old printing presses, where, technorati.com
