1osmidrosis, prosopagnosia, and autophagy 1 Citation #fullpost{display:inline;}Once upon a wonderful time, when the world was new and the sky was blue and the lambs frolicked in the meadows and the bears shat in the woods but carefully cleaned up after themselves, and people loved each other and never was heard a troublesome word... Nah! Nobody wants to hear that story..."I'll tell you a story," the wrinkled old man said, the aged and nut-brown guru at the top of the world, "of good triumphing over evil, and the redemptive power of love. 1 Citation Nature Medicine is not one of the journals I usually follow. Today, several of my literature alerting services - and several press releases as well - pointed to a paper in the AOP section of Nature medicine that appeared to be a must-read. As usual, the press releases are vague about what the study actually does, but they contain all the words needed to get me interested: autophagy, ubiquitin-proteasome system, Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s disease - and, of course, the ultimate cure f, technorati.com

1 Citation Once there was a very advanced species of lifeform. Their civilisation was so glitteringly sophisticated and required so much energy to keep it going that they had to construct special devices around entire galaxies to capture every last smidgin, joule, erg, electron-volt of energy emitted from all the suns within all those galaxies. After a while they realised that even those huge amounts of energy stolen from entire galaxies were not going to be enough to keep their civilization going, longer t, technorati.com

1 Citation One day, advanced extra-terrestrial beings from another galaxy came to Planet Earth. This was not the first time the aliens had come to the Planet, so they were very surprised at the dramatic extent to which the level of bio-diversity had fallen since their last visit. Every single one of the species that they had previously identified as having potential for self consciousness, had seemingly become extinct in a relatively short period of time.It was therefore very sad, quite tragic in fact, but, technorati.com

The secondary literature, or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the review 1 Citation November 10, 2008 Autophagy, Calorie restriction, DNA damage & repair, Diabetes, Gene expression, IGF, Immunology, Mitochondria, Oxidation, Progeria, Sarcopenia Sometimes I feel like our field produces review articles faster than it produces good ideas. Certainly, biogerontology generates more reviews in a given week than truly significant papers, but the same might be said of any discipline. I?ve been ambivalent about how to deal with reviews ? I?ve considered ignoring them altoget, technorati.com

Marijuana May Be Used to Kill Cancer Cells 1 Citation Great news for the supporters of medical marijuana; a study conducted by a group of Spanish researchers seem to indicate that there may be a more specific use for the cannabis plant in cancer treatment that goes beyond pain management. The study indicates that an active ingredient in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may trigger a natural process that will eventually lead to the death of a cell. The study was reported in the April 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. If t, technorati.com

1 Citation Welcome to the tenth edition of Hourglass , our blog carnival about the biology of aging. This month, the carnival has returned home to Ouroboros. In this issue, we have submissions from six bloggers, including a nice mix of veterans and new participants. Several of the posts are united by common themes: we have heavy representation from the neuroscience community, and multiple discussions of the clinical and social payoffs that are likely to result from progress in lifespan extension. Autophagy and Loading Trucks For UPS 1 Citation When I was in college, one of the many jobs I had was loading trucks for UPS. Boxes would move throughout the warehouse on a series of conveyor belts. The dock I worked on had five 18-wheeler trucks. Those trucks once full would leave Columbus and head off to different regions of East Ohio. My truck was for Zanesville, Ohio. As packages heading for East Ohio would move to our area, a worker on a platform would check the city and zip code, and then push the box onto the appropriate slide wh, technorati.com
