two times equal charm.

Well, round two for my heart. I was awakened at four a.m. by my heart beating very strangely in my chest. Not so strangely that i did not instantly recognize atrial fibrillation. I woke chris up and we went off to the hospital again. I was in there for only a couple hours before they cardioverted me. This time they had to do it twice. Chris said it was pretty scary. I can't imagine how scared i would have been in her position. I can't imagine losing her. After I came to they discharged, technorati.com

HEART DISEASE and AF

1 Citation
I have heart failure caused by severe left ventricular dysfunction. I also have atrial fibrillation. I am about to be "cardioverted" with an electric shock to try and re-establish a normal heart rhythm. As I do not feel particularly unwell... I am wondering if this is a good idea. What does anyone think?, technorati.com

Pretty cool day at work

1 Citation
I had a fun day at work yesterday, which is kind of shocking because normally it?s merely tolerable. In order of least cool to most cool, but all having some degree of coolness? I gave flu shots to all the nurses. This is especially intimidating as a student nurse.  I am proud to report that almost everyone raved at my technique and said they could hardly even feel the injection. Apparently I have more of a knack for IMs than IVs. I also got my own flu shot (though I didn?t give it myself) and, technorati.com

Cardioversion

I took Mom and Dad to a local hospital yesterday for Mom to have cardioversion.  They shock the heart to try to get it back to normal rythym.  They?ve given her all kinds of drugs to try the same thing, but they haven?t worked and they make her feel like crap. It wasn?t the hospital they usually go to and Mom wanted me to go along to make sure Dad didn?t get lost or something.  The procedure itself take about 2 minutes, another 15 minutes were spent getting the IV line in and getting her rea, technorati.com

Glory Days

1 Citation
Ah, it used to be such a simple affair. A simple dance between doctor and nurse and patient. A little oxygen applied, an IV started, a drug administered. The melodic cadence of the monitor chirping softly as the patient drifted off to sleep, eyes heavy, jaw dropping open. Yes, a little sleepy time in the office and then.... BLAM! A few gazillion volts were applied across the chest to restore the heart rhythm to normal. The patient would reflexly jerk, sometimes catching the doctor betwe, technorati.com

Living With Atrial Fibrillation

1 Citation
I read this recent article by New York Times business writer Duff Wilson regarding his mother's difficulties managing atrial fibrillation: the need for anticoagulation, ineffectiveness of cardioversion, the side effects of the antiarrhythmic drugs, and her indecision regarding future drug or device therapies. For now she has decided leave her rhythm alone and (hopefully) stick with just anticoagulation. For some, doing nothing might just be the best option, provided the heart rate is well-co, technorati.com
