Ghrelin Associated With Improved Appetite in Frail Women 1 Citation Endocrine Today reports that in frail women with unexplained weight loss, ghrelin showed improvement in appetite and growth hormone levels, according to new data presented at The Endocrine Society Annual Meeting. Ghrelin, a relatively new, small, appetite-stimulating peptide hormone, is synthesized and secreted by the stomach, said Carrie Burns, MD, assistant professor of medicine for the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. ?These data are the first to demonstrate an improvement in appetite and growth hormone secretion with ghrelin administration in frail older women with unexplained weight loss,? Hormone Helps Frail Women Gain Weight 1 Citation Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania found that a hormone called ghrelin increased the appetite of frail older women, which could help stop weight loss that can be a downward spiral in aging. Infusions of ghrelin helped women take in more calories per meal right away. These findings were presented by Anne Cappola, MD, ScM, assistant professor of Medicine in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and Carrie Burns, MD, assistant professor of clinical Medicine in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
