1 | 2 | Next1 Citation First, the researchers had to isolate the active component in the plant. In 1963, the team started working on a 20-kg sample of the wood and bark of C. acuminata using a process called ?bioactivity-directed fractionation.? In this process, the crude plant extract is purified in an iterative manner. Fractions showing potent activity are carried on to the next stages, and the process is repeated until the compound or compounds responsible for the bioactivity observed in the crude extract are isolated., delicious.com

1 Citation Annonaceous acetogenins have been shown to have significant cytotoxic, in vivo antitumor, and pesticidal properties. Monthly twig samples of Asimina triloba extracted with CH 2 Cl 2 were monitored for biological activity using the brine shrimp lethality test (BST). The LC 50 values determined by the BST correlated with the concentration of acetogenins in the twigs and hence showed the relative bioactivity of the monthly extracts. The results revealed that the months of May, June, and July were the top three months for acetogenin production. There was a one to two order of magnitude decrease in activity in late fall to winter. These results showed that the contents of bullatacin and the mixture of asimicin and trilobacin increased significantly in May and June, with bullatacin at 13 and 15 ppm, respectively, and the mixture of asimicin and trilobacin at 47 and 51 ppm, respectively in the dry weight of the twigs., delicious.com

1 Citation Several studies have documented the anticancer and chemopreventive efficacy of grape seed extract (GSE) against various malignancies including prostate cancer (PCA). With regard to anticancer and cancer chemopreventive effects of GSE, several studies have shown that this mixture inhibits human breast carcinoma MCF-7, human lung cancer A-427 and human gastric cancer CRL-1739 cell growth, but enhances the growth and viability of normal human gastric mucosal and normal J774A., delicious.com

1 Citation Wheat germ oil yields alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E). Researchers at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, Illinois, in cooperation with scientists at the Agricultural Products Research and Technology Center, Oklahoma State University, studied the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as an alternative extraction and refining method to for wheat germ oil (WGO). SC-CO2 was demonstrated to effectively extract the WGO and the oil contained the same proportions of fatty acids as oil obtained using conventional hexane extraction. Supercritical fluid fractionation (SFF) was also investigated as a means to remove unwanted free fatty acids from the WGO. SFF effectively separated the free fatty acids from the WGO while leaving behind the bioactive component, alpha-tocopherol, in the final product. This study demonstrated that SC-CO2 extraction and SFF can effectively extract and purify WGO., delicious.com
