1 | 2 | NextCan We Please Stop Making Drinks Into Fads? 1 Citation Filed under: Gin, Trends, Spirits The whole subject of mixed drinks and alcohol has made me pretty tense lately -- a feeling that was further compounded by the excellent post by Paul Clarke on Serious Eats about the start of the absinthe backlash. Backlash... about a drink. This isn't a certain style of jeans, it's a drink. If you like it, you like it. While trends might influence our eating, do any of you say: "Gee, chocolate chip cookies aren't in right now. I'm going to stop eating them"? No, technorati.com

1 Citation I?m going to go ahead and get this out of the way now: despite the fact that today is March 17, this is not, in any way, a post related to St. Patrick?s Day. Despite the fact that I am, somewhere in the family tree, Irish to some degree, I have never been a big ?wear green and drink Guinness? kind of person. Let me just say that while I may make a big pot of colcannon and have a lager at various points during the year, this is another one of those holidays that has always felt artificial to me,, technorati.com

1 Citation In this third instalment of the spin-off of the popular Quentaris shared-world series, a character from the original series is actually killed off, something that doesn?t usually happen in shared universes. As it happens in the prologue, it?s no secret. The Archon, ruler of Quentaris, is dying. His horrible nephew Florian is persuaded to finish him off rather than wait for his inevitable death. Florian?s ?friend? Janus (as in the two-faced god?) reminds him of the prophecy that declares that an, technorati.com

1 Citation Persuaded the Lindas to go out to dinner last night. Downtown Coffeyville boasts Lanning's Grill & Bar (across the street from the Mexican restaurant the workampers went to a few weeks ago). I had the ribeye steak special with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, and green beans, with a glass of cabernet (house). The steak was rare and nicely peppered and good. I wanted a gimlet before dinner (full bar, they advertised) but (a) the waitress had never heard of this drink, and (b) they didn't have R, technorati.com

1 Citation They say the two surviving enterprises in a spiraling economy are books and booze. People usually skip the vacation and the fancy nights out in rough times to stay home, cuddle up with a good book and get trashed. So why not give the people what they want for the holidays? Whether your friends and family are heavy readers or heavy drinkers here are some great book and booze pairings to give as (affordable) gifts. 1 Citation Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Dale DeGroff. If you've never heard of DeGroff, you'll be surprised to know that he has changed your life. Remember that basil gimlet you enjoyed at the bar last week? You can thank Dale for that. Or what about that perfectly poured martini? Dale's responsible for that, too. Known to food insiders as the King of Cocktails, Dale DeGroff is single-handedly responsible for the renaissance of classic cocktails. Back in 1980s New York, at a time when the majority of bars served drinks made from overly-sweet mixes, Dale was mixing drinks with fresh, seasonal, local ingredients and creating cocktails based on preprohibition recipes. 1 Citation Sorry for the dearth of posts this week. There was a political event happening and I was paying attention to that. ;) But, fear not, that did not keep me from my work with the Gimlet. The first experimental track I followed was altering the proportions. As I mentioned in the intro post the recipe on the bottle of Rose?s Lime suggests a ratio of 3:2 (Gin:Rose?s). I found these proportions to be too sweet for my taste. I dropped the Rose?s down so I had a ratio of 2:1 and found that the res, technorati.com
