1 | 2 | Next1 Citation For Christmas, my best friend Usch bought me a real Ginkgo biloba leaf, copper- and silver-plated. It came on a small ribbon, to be hung as a tree ornament, but I thought "nuts to that" and bought a silver chain to thread it on so I could wear it as a necklace. It has had so many compliments, and about half of them came when I was at the RHS Halls on Tuesday. So many people think it's a butterfly though! Most notably my mother refused to accept that it was a ginkgo leaf, and argued t, technorati.com

1 Citation I took yesterday afternoon off to go to the RHS London Flower Show . It was my first time ever at the Horticultural Halls, so I geeked out a bit by taking photos of the halls themselves. This was the entrance to Lawrence Hall, a magnificent art-deco building. And it looked even more fabulous inside. I wasn't as impressed with Lindley Hall, across the road. I liked two of the front garden designs. I'm a bit of a sucker for blue lights as an accent in any garden (I can't w, technorati.com

1 Citation The ginkgo biloba is a special tree. It?s one of the few examples of a ? living fossil ?, a species that exists today, and appears in fossils without much change. It is also unique in that it is classified as a conifer , and yet it has broad leaves. Four gingko trees survived within a 2 km radius of the Hiroshima atomic bomb explosion. As bonsai, however, ginkgo biloba present certain challenges.Unlike many other species used in bonsai, the leaves of the ginkgo do not reduce in size. 1 Citation Last weekend I got an amazing deal on a Dioon edule. This made me very happy, because now I have a cycad that isn't Cycas revoluta (which is so common that the head of the Palaeontology department at the Natural History Museum has one currently dying in his office). It could be hardy enough to go outside (Bastard and Bastard II are doing okay), but it wasn't such a good deal that I'm prepared to sink the money killing it with frost. The fronds look very soft and delicate, don't they? Well, tha, technorati.com

1 Citation Sometimes the best way to learn is to make a really, really dumb mistake. Outside the Phipps Conservatory there was an avenue of Ginkgo biloba. And they were starting to show their autumn colours (I have never seen a Ginkgo go any colour other than yellow). Now, perhaps I've just been really unobservant, but I had never seen Ginkgo fruit before, even though there are plenty of the trees in and around London. And I thought, wouldn't it be great fun to pick a few fruit, get them through custom, technorati.com

1 Citation In a garden full of evergreens it's nice to get a bonus bit of colour, even if that colour comes from the plants shedding their leaves, thus beginning my nervous wait for spring buds and the proof that I haven't killed them. I was relieved to see Taxodium distichum is deciduous, as when I got back from the US it was doing this: The Ginkgo biloba is yellow, and shedding leaves (if only I could lift up its skirt and check if it's a girl ginkgo or a boy ginkgo...): And although it looks a bit, technorati.com
