NZ kiwifruit industry clubs together to protect its own (Reefer Trends)

New Zealand?s kiwifruit producers have voted unanimously to support an opt-in contribution to the hail relief scheme. At a New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated (NZKGI) Forum held earlier this week on Wednesday 17 June 2009 in Tauranga, kiwifruit growers voted unanimously to support an opt-in component to the hail compensation fund that will provide additional funds to support those growers that were affected by hail in the 2009 season. The storms hit the Bay of Plenty region on 11 May 2009 and caused damage to fruit on the vine before harvest. An estimated 350 orchards were located in the affected area, covering 660 hectares. A hail compensation fund, similar to insurance cover, currently exists to provide financial support and compensation for growers affected by hail. The existing Hail Fund is currently set at a maximum of NZ$2m for Zespri Green and NZ$2m for Zespri Gold. However due to the extent of the damage to orchards growing Zespri Green, the kiwifruit industry decided to, delicious.com

In accepting the Best Logistics Strategy for China Award Zespri said that within a 10-year timeframe, China and Hong Kong could form up to 20% of its total business. Zespri International was awarded Best Logistics Strategy for China at the New Zealand China Trade Association (NZCTA) award ceremony. ?These awards recognise the value of trade partnerships with China and foster stronger ties between our two countries. It is an honour and a privilege for ZESPRI to be recognised for our work in China?, said Zespri Director Corporate and Grower Services Carol Ward, when acknowledging the important role that China makes to Zespri?s current and future growth strategy. China currently accounts for 6% of Zespri Kiwifruit sales and is a ?key market for growth?. Based on current growth rates, it is realistic to anticipate that within a 10-year timeframe, China and Hong Kong could form up to 20% of its total business. A critical component of ensuring success in a market as diverse and complex as Ch, delicious.com

Kiwifruit damage at top end of estimate (Reefer Trends)

1 Citation
NZ Kiwifruit Growers Inc said early estimates of NZ$10m worth of damage to export kiwifruit caused by last month?s hailstorm have proved to be accurate. The New Zealand kiwifruit industry is to meet tomorrow to decide how best to assist the 460 growers that were affected by the hailstorm on May 11. The problem is that the hail insurance policy set aside for the pool for hail-affected growers isn't big enough, because of the size of the event., delicious.com

NZKGI rejects T&G call for industry re-structure (Reefer Trends)

1 Citation
NZ Kiwifruit Growers Inc claims many producers welcome the single channel system for exports follow from their experiences of the deregulation of the apple industry. ?New Zealand kiwifruit growers will ultimately decide the future of this industry and there is generally no grower support for deregulation,? said Peter Ombler, President of NZKGI. ?NZ growers are the owners of the kiwifruit industry with over $3.8bn invested and the majority of growers are shareholders of Zespri,? he said. ?Many growers remember their poor returns a couple decades ago when there were multi exporters before growers made the decision to move to the current industry structure with Zespri as their marketer. In a recent survey 84% of growers wanted the current structure retained for their continued success.? ?Ironically many kiwifruit growers who are also apple growers are most vocal in their support for the current industry structure, following on from their experiences of the deregulation of the apple indust, delicious.com

T&G ups ante on single channel kiwifruit (Reefer Trends)

1 Citation
New Zealand?s largest horticultural concern has submitted a position paper making its case for the kiwifruit industry's economic potential in a deregulated market. The company has made the move after it was locked out of a collaborative market agreement with Zespri earlier this year. T&G also argues Zespri has breached 1999 regulations preventing it from selling foreign grown fruit under the Zespri brand. T&G chairman Tony Gibbs criticised the rejection of a collaborative agreement to sell the fruit with Zespri the only way growers can export to markets other than Australia as "protectionist nonsense". Mr Gibbs is pinning hopes on past National government support for deregulation of producer boards such as dairy, lamb, beef, wool, and pip fruit. T&G also provided the Government with an analysis by economic consulting firm Nera on the potential benefits of deregulation over the next decade. The report made the $200m assessment of additional benefits for gold kiwifruit. Whatever the Gove, delicious.com

Zespri draws succour from high places (Reefer Trends)

1 Citation
Fresh produce industry body Horticulture New Zealand and the country?s agriculture minister have both expressed support for the single desk model. The expressions of support come at a time when the Kiwifruit Exporters to Australia group KETA has lodged a complaint with the country?s Horticultural Export Authority. The complaint concerns Zespri?s decision to substitute class one fruit on the Australian market for the traditional class two this year to deal with an oversupply of premium kiwifruit. Australia is the only export market not covered by Zespri?s single-desk system, and is managed as a destination for class two kiwifruit by KETA. KETA accused Zespri of using its ?monopolistic and privileged position in New Zealand to abuse the Australian business?. It said the Australian market was unwilling to raise prices for class one fruit, threatening commercial returns., delicious.com

Zespri reassures on Forex losses (Reefer Trends)

1 Citation
Despite making a provision for a hedging loss of NZ$83m in 2009 the kiwifruit marketer says that it will now make a profit due to ?a significant shift in the market?. The New Zealand kiwifruit exporter was hit by more than NZ$50m in foreign exchange contract losses last year and has factored in an even higher loss this year. Financial statements released in its annual report this week show Zespri lost NZ$50.4m in the year to March 31 on derivative contracts and at that date expected to make a further $82.6m loss this year. The exporter uses derivative contracts to protect itself against currency fluctuations in the different markets it sells kiwifruit into. Losses incurred through hedging must come out of the income growers are paid by Zespri. Zespri chief financial officer Mervyn Dallas said the company employed prudent hedging strategies with the aim of smoothing out volatility, particularly during global economic uncertainty. "At the time the figures were compiled for the annual rep, delicious.com
