At a New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated (NZKGI) Forum held earlier this week on Wednesday 17 June 2009 in Tauranga, kiwifruit growers voted unanimously to support an opt-in component to the hail compensation fund that will provide additional funds to support those growers that were affected by hail in the 2009 season. The storms hit the Bay of Plenty region on 11 May 2009 and caused damage to fruit on the vine before harvest. An estimated 350 orchards were located in the affected area, covering 660 hectares. A hail compensation fund, similar to insurance cover, currently exists to provide financial support and compensation for growers affected by hail. The existing Hail Fund is currently set at a maximum of NZ$2m for Zespri Green and NZ$2m for Zespri Gold. ZESPRI responds to T&G (Reefer Trends) 1 Citation The kiwifruit marketer has warned Turners & Growers, a 1% player in the kiwifruit market, not to expect to determine policy for New Zealand?s kiwifruit industry. Zespri said that while it will review the position paper submitted by T&G, it had the support of industry body New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers which said it didn't want deregulation. It said that it would be its growers, not T&G, who decided the future of their industry. Zespri is to review the T&G position paper and a report by Australian economic consulting firm Nera, which outlined efficiency gains of NZ$200m alone for gold kiwifruit over the next decade through having a deregulated industry structure. Yesterday NZ Kiwifruit Growers president Peter Ombler said that most growers were shareholders of Zespri and had memories of poor returns two decades ago before adopting the Zespri structure.
