Exits: Yahoo's Do-Nothings Set to Bleed Purple

1 Citation
The nature of corporations as they grow is to become glacial and bureaucratic because no one trusts anyone. You spend half the day reporting on what you do so execs higher up can keep an eye on you because they believe that some how, you're out to destroy the company. And probably, some number of employees are. Or at the very least, not working up to their potential. Here's an idea, do some careful hiring and recruiting, hire people who are excellent at their jobs AND have some moral fiber, and set them loose to do what you hired them for. No one gets hired to fill out status reports, but that's mostly what we all end up doing. So the good people leave for greener, entrepreneurial pastures, and the people happy about status reports stay, get promoted and the whole thing perpetuates itself until you have Yahoo, GM or any other number of glacial bureauracracies.the only value of valleywag hides in the comments., blogmarks.net

visualcomplexity.com | Los ojos del mundo

Los ojos del mundo (the world's eyes) illustrates the photos people visiting Spain leave behind them as evidences of contemporary tourism in the country. What do they see? What do they enjoy? Where do they travel to? Where do they come from? In order to answer some of these questions, and make tourism a more quantifiable phenomenon, the authors used flickr's large pool of photos (and its inherent metadata) to produce a set of 3 alluring visualizations mapping different behavioral patterns across Spain: (un)photographed Spain - density and flows of photographers in the Iberian Peninsula; Spaces of Diversity - Britons weaving their path in Barcelona; and finally, Spaces of Activity - photos from Barcelona with tags related to 'partying'., blogmarks.net

NIHONTO-NO-BI: Tsuba I

1 Citation
Sukashi Tetsu Tsuba These tsuba are made from forged iron (tetsu) plate and have designs or patterns cut into them. Some of the more elaborate could take up to three months to complete. Sukashi work is of two basic types: Ko-sukashi: ? in negative relief, where a minor design is cut into the plate (e.g. a cherry blossom); these tsuba were often produced by swordsmiths (tosho) or armour-makers (katchushi or kacchushi), however many were also produced by tsubako of different schools and signed. Ji-sukashi: ? in positive relief, where a large amount of the plate is removed, and the design is formed by the plate that remains. There are two forms of ji-sukashi: (a) yo- (you) sukashi, a positive silhouette where metal is removed to leave a solid shape; and (b) kage-sukashi, a type of negative silhouette where only the outline of the design remains, such as with a pencil drawing., blogmarks.net
