A nucleoside is a component of DNA and RNA consisting of a purine or pyrimidine base linked to a sugar. A nucleoside linked to a phosphate group in DNA or RNA is known as a nucleotide., delicious.com

Nucleotides and Nucleosides

1 Citation
This diagram is a simple explanation of the difference between a Nucleoside and a Nucleotide (as mentioned in Biological Molecules - MB1001). The first structure is simply a base --> adenine. The second structure represents a nucleoside, the base is bonded to a pentose sugar (in this case Ribose). The third structure is a nucleotide and the pentose sugar is now bonded to a phosphate group. In this case Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) is the product. Nucleotides are the monomer of nucleic acids. When ribose sugar is used as in this diagram RNA is produced. The removal of the hydroxyl group on the second carbon of ribose produces deoxyribose; the sugar present in the structure of DNA., delicious.com

An HIV Enzyme ?Bullet Train!?

1 Citation
HHMI researchers have found that HIV reverse transcriptase exhibits a stunning display of enzymatic dynamics as it zooms back and forth on the very DNA it is building.  Each of the DNA?s two strands serves as a rail, with reverse transcriptase ? an enzyme crucial to HIV?s replication and survival ? racing to the end of the rails so it can continue to extend them.  The work also provides new insights into how an important class of anti-HIV drugs, called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhib, technorati.com

Lung Cancer Study of Novel Oral Drug Sapacitabine at CORT

1 Citation
CORT has opened a phase I-II study of sapacitabine for second-line therapy of unresectable advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Sapacitabine is an oral nucleoside analog prodrug that acts through a dual mechanism. The compound interferes with DNA synthesis by causing single-strand DNA breaks and induces arrest of the cell division cycle at G2 phase. Both sapacitabine and its major metabolite, CNDAC, have demonstrated potent anti-tumor activity in both blood and solid tum, technorati.com

Medication For Aids

1 Citation
A variety of medications is now available to combat the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) yet no single medicine to-date is effective when taken alone and none of them provide a cure. Combinations of HIV medications are valuable in controlling the amount of virus in the body as well as maintaining the health of the body?s immune system. The medications that are currently available come in 5 different classes and each works in a different way, technorati.com

The Harm Of Lipodystrophy
