Foreign Affairs - A Balanced Strategy - Robert M. Gates 1 Citation But no one should ever neglect the psychological, cultural, political, and human dimensions of warfare. War is inevitably tragic, inefficient, and uncertain, and it is important to be skeptical of systems analyses, computer models, game theories, or doctrines that suggest otherwise. We should look askance at idealistic, triumphalist, or ethnocentric notions of future conflict that aspire to transcend the immutable principles and ugly realities of war, that imagine it is possible to cow, shock, or awe an enemy into submission, instead of tracking enemies down hilltop by hilltop, house by house, block by bloody block. As General William Tecumseh Sherman said, "Every attempt to make war easy and safe will result in humiliation and disaster."

Arago: People, Postage & the Post 1 Citation The online database of the National Postal Museum, Arago?, was named in honor of the French physicist, astronomer and politician, François Arago (1786-1853). A friend of James Smithson (benefactor of the Smithsonian Institution), Arago believed that science and available technologies should be used to advance public knowledge and improve everyday life. Renowned as a scientist, he was also a humanitarian who used his political roles to introduce social reforms ? the abolition of slavery, universal manhood suffrage, and the education of the lower classes ? not only in France but also in its colonial possessions., blogmarks.net

From superblog to ?Internet newspaper?, the lessons of the Huffington Post | Monday Note 1 Citation What?s so special about the Huffington Post? surprise packages, benevolent dictatorships 1 Citation It?s like if I was to concede that a benevolent dictatorship is a far more effective model for a political system than a liberal democracy. Instant-Messagers Really Are About Six Degrees from Kevin Bacon 1 Citation With records of 30 billion electronic conversations among 180 million people from around the world, researchers have concluded that any two people on average are distanced by just 6.6 degrees of separation, meaning that they could be linked by a string of seven or fewer acquaintances.
The database covered all of the Microsoft Messenger instant-messaging network in June 2006, or roughly half the world's instant-messaging traffic at that time, researchers said.

Why does it matter that people from around the world are closely tied together? Researchers said that the knowledge might have applications for political organizations, charity efforts, natural disaster relief and missing-person searches.
"They could create large meshes of people who could be mobilized with the touch of a return key," Horvitz said.

A GALLERY OF 35 ANTI-U.S. CHINESE POLITICAL CARTOONS (circa 1958-1960) 1 Citation Presenting A GALLERY OF 35 ANTI-U.S. CHINESE POLITICAL CARTOONS (circa 1958-1960)
Culled and restored from reviewing hundreds of Eastern newspaper pages and illustrations, this set of 35 images represents what we consider the best late 50s editorial cartoons (Manhua) from China and Indochina. Set during a time of escalating western imperialism, these images react against U.S. military actions in Laos and Vietnam, and represent a unique moment of political commentary. It seems to be a hidden history, too. It's with some pride that we indicate most of these comics have never before been re-published, and even fewer have ever been exhibited or documented for U.S. audiences. Enjoy - Ethan, blogmarks.net
