Rabbinic Parables

1 Citation
I recently read a fascinating book entitled They Also Taught in Parables: Rabbinic Parables from the First Centuries of the Christian Era by Harvey K. McArthur and Robert M. Johnston. The first part is a collection of selected parables of the ????? (tannaim - the Rabbinic sages in the Mishnah from approximately 70-200 CE) and the second part comprised of essays on the nature of their parables and some comparisons with the parables of Jesus. The rabbinic word for parable(s) is mashal/meshalim, an, technorati.com

Did the Torah really say that?

1 Citation
A widely quoted rabbinic statement is ??????? ????: ?? ?? ?????? - ???? ??????? (?And the Torah said: If someone comes to kill you, get up and kill him). This statement can be found in a number of places in the Talmud: B. Berachot 48a; Berachot 62b; Yoma 85b; Sanhedrin 72a. As an aside, it is also the name of a book written by the former head of the Shin Bet, Yaakov Peri. The problem is that this apparent quote from the Torah, ??????? ?????, is not to be found anywhere in the entire Tanakh. The, technorati.com

The Printing of the Shulhan Aruch

1 Citation
R. Yair Hoffman has some comments on the printing of the Shulhan Aruch, Most of us know that the Shulchan Aruch was written by Rabbi Yoseph Karo. The first time that the Shulchan Aruch was printed with the Rama was not until 1577?four ye, technorati.com

Babylonian Talmud Online

Sorry for the really long delay between posts. The stress level of this quarter has ramped up big time lately, so I may not be able to post much over the next few weeks either. However, I did want to share something interesting that I encountered recently. I am part of a men's small group at my church and we have been talking about the book of Hebrews. Last week we discussed chapter 7, in which the author of Hebrews seems to view the mysterious figure of Melkizedek as a type of Christ. Afte, technorati.com

Discomfort with the Zohar

1 Citation
While teaching a class the other day I came across an interesting note in Menachem Elon?s magnum opus Jewish Law : History, Sources, Principles . In his discussion of R. Yosef Caro?s Beit Yosef , Elon quotes extensively from Karo?s introduction to this work. At the end of a long list of authorities whom he will cite, Caro writes All their statements will be fully explained; and in, a few instances, passages from the Zohar .
