Gravitational Mass Movements

1 Citation
There is a small Valley near Innsbruck (Austria/Tyrol), the Sillschlucht. It Approximately is oriented N-S and slices through the crystalline basement of the Eastern Alps. Where I took this picture the lithology consists of fine "Innsbrucker Quarzphyllite", a mica-rich, dark schist. The way the trees grow gives a clear hint that this slope is moving downwards gravitationally. But there is more: directly underneath this trees is a wooden bridge. Unfortunately I have no picture of it - but th, technorati.com

Plant Fossils from the Brennermesozoikum

1 Citation
Today I am going to post some Fossils from the Brennermesozoikum on the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy in the middle of the Alps. At this particular point where I found this samples the lithology consists of terrigene schistous anthracit-mica sediments perhaps originating from some intracontinental swampy area. Plant fossils are not very common at this site, but are occasionally found in the waste disposal sites of some (rather fruitless) attempts to mine for anthrazit in the last cent, technorati.com

my house plans

1 Citation
The old man who owned the house before me was born in here in the village. He married the girl next door - quite a feat in a village of less than 50 people. It could be a romantic story or it could be a scary one. Also scary is the idea of living within a stone?s throw of your parents AND your in-laws. The house was built in 1939 by his father who was a respected stonemason. He also built the bridge and other houses in the village, and buildings in the nearest tiny town. My house is actually, technorati.com

The schist up with which I must put

1 Citation
The house in which I live was randomly renovated over the years by a tribe of do-no-good piskies. These wee folk managed to rearrange the waste pipes that run between the main stack and the outlet to the septic in such a way that it actuall runs up hill for about 5 metres. As you can imagine, this roguish trick is the root cause of some number of problems. Things hit a peak a couple of weeks ago. I got home from work Saturday to discover that the washer was disgorging its watery contents a, technorati.com
