My friend had killed himself inside the fort; my father paid the money that I owed; I felt as if I could no longer move in dance class. These three things, taken apart were nothing. Added up? April 28 - Poem A Day Challenge - Sestina 1 Citation Today's prompt : "I want you to write a sestina. So start figuring out your 6 end words and get writing. But wait! Today is Tuesday, so you have one other option. You can write a poem about the sestina (your love, hate, frustration with, etc.)." Poetic Asides "The sestina follows a strict pattern of the repetition of the initial six end-words of the first stanza through the remaining five six-line stanzas, culminating in a three-line envoi." 1 Citation Day 29 and madness has set in. I have just spent three hours writing a sestina, a form which I abhor above all other forms. Surely tomorrow, I must use the remaining words, including lunacy, from Wordle #15. Carolee?s prompt at Read Write Poem was to spend five minutes writing a list starting with the words ?I don?t think I can?? My list included ?I don?t think I can move house?. This is the resulting poem: How not to move house It snowed the day we moved here, in nineteen eighty-four, At, technorati.com

American Spunk Catalog - the Sestina 1 Citation I?ve added another piece of writing to my pages in the sidebar. It?s a sestina called American Spunk Catalog . I started writing it in March this year and finished it today. The title came to me long ago, back in April 2007. I enjoy this particular combination of words because it primes the imagination. What might an American Spunk Catalog look like? What might be contained in its pages? In working my way back to writing fiction, I decided to start with a sestina because it?s a highly struc, technorati.com

A Half-Dozen Words to Bend Your Writing Mind 1 Citation This isn?t normally the way I?d start a post ? with poetry. (That typically happens only in my regular Friday whiskey river-triggered ruminations.) But I wanted to open with something useful to non-writing site visitors, as well as the writers who stop by.So let?s begin simply. And if you?re a writer looking for a challenge, kee, technorati.com

1 Citation I was cleaning up my computer's "desktop," which is neither a desk nor a top (an uppermost surface), and I ran across a list of "prompts" or "ideas" for poems--each prompt designed to help students start writing a poem. * Probably, the issue of whether to use prompts in creative-writing classes (or simply in one's own writing) is less contentious now than it was 10-20 years ago. In all the creative-writing courses I took in college, we were given almost no prompts. In one class, however, Kar, technorati.com

1 Citation In checking my blog stats today, I noticed that someone came to my blog by using the term ?random sestina generator? in a search engine. Interesting. After having written a few sestinas, I can?t imagine how they can be effectively generated randomly. They?re complicated beasts that take much wrestling. Rather than dismiss the possibility outright, I entered ?random sestina generator? into Google myself. My blog came up as the fourth hit because I had used the same term in a post about a year, technorati.com

1 Citation I have spent the past several weeks writing poetry. Sorta. That wouldn?t be surprising. I like the way that poetry makes you look at things from fresh angles. That and the fact that my writing is a bit on the embroidered side to begin with make writing verse a natural for me. But I do not enjoy reading it. Way too much work to get the full meaning from something with layers and layers. I tend to read to find out what happens next, and I?m no better about that in my 60s than I was in my t, technorati.com
