The Absurdity of the USTR's Blame Canada Approach

1 Citation
The IIPA, the lead U.S. lobbyist on international IP matters, has issued a press release on the USTR Special 301 report, welcoming the inclusion of Canada on the Priority Watch List.  Yet the release inadvertently demonstrates why the designation is so absurd.  Included at the end are the estimated software piracy percentages for each country on the list.  While the BSA claims are themselves subject to challenge, compare Canada to the remainder of the list.  Canada comes in at 32%.  The remain, technorati.com

Canada Finally Guilty As Charged?

As we await in intense suspense the "Special 301" report from Washington, it is perhaps time for Canada to confess to its past piracy peccadilloes. The NY Times has a dramatic exposé of Canadian piracy, counterfeiting, intermediary liability and cross border illicit commerce and piracy that has devastated the American music publishing industry by 50%. The American music publishers were sufficiently concerned that they held a three day conference about this "last week."The thing is that "last week, technorati.com

Nintendo Not Blaming Canada

Clement's Office Says Copyright Consultations Coming This Summer

1 Citation
Among the myriad of reports on the USTR's legally dubious decision to place Canada on the Priority Watch List, one from Reuters is particularly noteworthy as it includes a reaction from Industry Minister Tony Clement's spokesperson.  Darren Cunningham is quoted as saying "we are looking forward to doing consultations on copyright this summer."  This is very important for several reasons.  First, it confirms the timeline for the next copyright bill as being the fall at the earliest.  Second, it, technorati.com
