Mount Apo- The GrandFather of The Philippine Mountains

1 Citation
Mount Apo ?Mount Apo is a large stratovolcano on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is the highest mountain in the country and overlooks Davao City, a few kilometres to the northeast. Its name means ?master? or ?grandfather?. Apo is flat topped, with three peaks, and is capped by a 500 m wide volcanic crater containing a small crater lake. It is a source of geothermal energy, but the date of its most recent eruption is unknown, and none are verified in historic times. Mount Apo is, technorati.com

Eruption and earthquakes at San Cristobal

1 Citation
Eruptions and earthquakes go hand-in-hand a lot of the time. It only makes sense as magma needs to move under the crust, causing movement (i.e., earthquakes). Additionally, any sort of explosions caused by the release of volatiles might cause earthquakes or even the collapse of an edifice (which in turn, shakes the earth). So, it is not surprising that the current eruption at San Cristobal in Nicaragua has produced earthquakes. The reports are relatively lacking in details, but San Cristobal is, technorati.com

Redoubt Mini-update for 2/13/2009

1 Citation
We?ve now had three weeks of waiting for Redoubt, and all we have to show for it is steam, seismicity and lots and lots of press . As of today, Redoubt continues with the same: elevated seismicity, constant monitoring , think it will erupt. Current status from AVO : Redoubt Volcano has not erupted. Elevated seismicity is continuing, dominated by ongoing volcanic tremor and occasional small earthquakes. A storm system is moving across the Redoubt area at present, which will make for, technorati.com

Redoubt Mini-update for 2/26/2009

1 Citation
The Redoubt watch is now been going for well over a month and this is how quickly things can change when monitoring volcanoes. The headline in my volcano RSS, when I saw it said: ?Redoubt quiets after weeks of activity, though eruption still possible? By the time I clicked on the link, the headline for the KTUU TV article became: ?Redoubt steaming at strongest level, seismic activity calms? The seismic event refered to happened yesterday afternoon (Alaska time) and the volc, technorati.com

The last mini-update for Redoubt ? for now?

1 Citation
AVO has officially downgraded the status at Redoubt from ?Watch? (orange) to ?Advisory? (yellow) . The seismicity at the volcano has dropped off for the last couple weeks and signs that an eruption was imminent have waned. This, again, shows the difficulty in trying to predict the behavior of a volcano. All the signs were there at Redoubt - increased seismicity, increased heat flow at the summit (seen as melting ice and increased fumarolic output), increased volcanic gases (CO2 and SO2) - but a, technorati.com
