Must We Fall?

1 Citation
The month of Tammuz is ripe with paradox, which stems from its dubious distinction as the month that marks the beginning of our fall from grace. The year starts in Nissan with a surge of exhilaration (a seratonin rush); we escape 210 years of slavery and witness the most mighty and corrupt nation in the world reduced to ruin by the G-d of Israel. And then, two months later, we experience the most powerful revelation of light and truth that has ever transpired on the planet. And yet, there is ine, technorati.com

Meaning in the Madness

Today is the saddest day in the Jewish Calendar so this calls for my only ever partially serious post. So while you, all five of you (my close family and friends that are following along so far) thought that jewButt was just fun and games, I feel the need to preemptively justify how I can do something silly with something as serious as religion, not just any religion but the one I happen to be a card-holding member of. Top 3 Reasons I decided to do jewButt: I tried for a really long t, technorati.com

On the eve of the 17th of Tammuz:Tonight we begin to mourn. The sin of the spies, destruction of the Temples and expulsion from the Land of Israel, expulsions from lands not our own, inquisitions and pogroms, the holocaust, expulsion from gush katif, the capture of gilad, ehud and eldad, the second Lebanon war - throbbing wounds that refuse to heal and scar our collective heart and soul while we wince at the pain of fresh gashes. It is no coincidence that all of these events occurred during the th, technorati.com

R' Enkin on Tisha B'Av ~ Rashash Story

1 Citation
Rabbi Ari Enkin over at Hirhurim has written a beautiful piece on the prohibition of learning Torah on Tisha B'Av . He finishes the post by relating the following story: The Rashash was once ?caught? studying Torah on Tisha B?av by some of his students. Sure enough, the students quickly rebuked the rebbe for studying Torah on the day of mourning, thereby violating the halacha, as well as what he had taught them. The rebbe, not to be outdone, quipped back: ?Yes my students, you are correct,, technorati.com

Does anyone know where I can find the full text of the kinah that starts with "??? ?????????? ??????????? ??? ??????? ??????"? (It's a daytime kinah, listed as 27 or 28, depending on the book.) Because your brokenness is as great as the sea: ????-?????? ??????? ?????????

I was going to post, at one point over the past three weeks, about how I wasn't really in the "Tisha B'Av mood" this year, and how hard it wasn't particularly difficult to feel sad, but it was difficult to feel sad for this.It is all too easy for me to read Eicha or kinot and feel sad for the losses that I have experienced personally. Experiencing communal losses, especially losses that took place so long ago, has always been more difficult. One of the challenges of Tisha B'Av for me is to move, technorati.com

Tisha B?av and Ganei Tal

1 Citation
I started noticing the small signs just a few days after I arrived. In truth, they were unmistakable. A note in a car here; a comment there. But only over the last few weeks has it begun to sink in to me. Today, on Tisha b?Av, the day we set aside to commemorate and mourn Jewish tragedy and loss, I find myself focused on the evacuees from Gush Katif, specifically the citizens of Ganei Tal. Three years ago, almost to the day, the government of Israel evicted the citizens of the twenty-one communi, technorati.com

Crocs For Tisha B'Av?

1 Citation
Crocs For Tisha B'Av? - Rav Elyashiv and Rav Shternbuch On Tisha B'Av it is assur to wear leather shoes. Crocs are synthetic and do not contain any leather. However there is a Machlokes between Rashi and the Rambam if wooden shoes that are not wrapped in leather, are assur on Yom Kippur because since you cannot feel the ground they are like shoes even though they don't have leather. The Shulchan Aruch (614:2) paskens like the Rambam who says that it is permissible while the Mishna Brura (5), technorati.com
