Synchrotrons ?a particle accelerator that produces exceptionally bright X-rays | Diamond light | The Economist

1 Citation
synchrotron?a particle accelerator that produces exceptionally bright X-rays which illuminate unseen worlds of atoms, molecules and fibres. It can decode the structure of proteins and can look deep into every pore in a moon rock. It can also map the chemical makeup of contaminated soils. A recently discovered new kind of iron oxide called fougerite can immobilise toxic substances like uranium, chromium, selenium, zinc and even caesium in contaminated land and water. The synchrotron is used to observe the formation/transformation of fougerite on an atomic scale as it captures heavy metals. Bonemeal is a source of phosphate that also combines with metals in soils creating relatively stable and immobile precipitates of metal phosphate which limits plant uptake. The action of bonemeal can be watched In the synchrotron and the data collected will be used to develop a predictive model of bonemeal?s efficacy., delicious.com
