Parashat Zachor: Selective Memory as a Means Towards a Healthier National Identity

I would like to offer an interpretation of Parashat Zachor that is not the literal meaning of the verses, I realize. But I like it nevertheless. The formulation ?Wipe out the memory of Amalek? is a strange one, since it can also be understood to mean to ?wipe out the remembrance of Amalek.? The difference is subtle but significant. One tells us to wipe out Amalek itself, while the other tells us to wipe out the memory of Amalek. In other words, if we understand the verse in the latter way, God i, technorati.com

This Shabbat we struggle with two forms of memory. Music has always had a mathematical component, but now it looks as if mathematics is shaping music. First there a musical intelligence software program that analyzes the likelihood of a song becoming a hit based on some thirty different factors. Now, for a small fee, you and your struggling band can submit a song to a number of companies for analysis. They can then advise you where to make changes that will result in a hit-producing mathe, technorati.com

Purim Afterthoughts, Part II

1 Citation
For the first time, I have made extensive use of Hebrew in this post. Don't worry, I don't intend to make a habit of it. My apologies to all readers who feel left out, but Hebrew makes it is easier to keep things brief and I'm pressed for time. Special thanks to my father, Rabbi Noam Gordon of Jerusalem, for encouraging me to put my Purim thoughts in writing. There is much here that is neither new nor mine, but I believe there is enough that warrents a post. To fully appreciate this post, I reco, technorati.com

Compassion for the cruel

This Shabbat I?ve been asked to give a dvar Torah . It?s political enough to also be a blog post. This week?s parasha is Parashat Tetsaveh (Exodus 27.20-30.10), which deals mostly with the clothing worn by the Cohanim and the sacrificial ritual surrounding their ordination. There is plenty of interesting material here, but my regular readers will not be surprised that I want to talk about another aspect of this Shabbat. It is Shabbat Zachor , the Shabbat before Purim. PARSHAS TEZAVA (Parshas Zocher)  Good Shabbos!  As I stepped outside the Synagogue early Friday morning, I met a Russian couple in the parking lot who asked if they could ask me a very important question.  I told them I would be happy to answer them to the best of my ability.  They looked at me very seriously and asked: ?When is Purim??  I must admit I was pleasantly surprised that the date of Purim was so important to this couple for I was not aware that they were observant or even cognizant, technorati.com

Remembrances

Last month brought us the daily counting of the Omer, which started during the Festival of Unleavened Bread and ends this month at Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks. The month of Sivan, which is the third month on the biblical calendar, has several events that are remembered. With the recounting of the story of Ruth, the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, and the empowering of the believers as recorded in the book of Acts, this month is full of events that are remembered. It is a good and healthy p, technorati.com

Week of Parshas Tetzaveh/Zachor

Rabbi Yehudah Prero Preparation for Happiness The Talmud states (Ta?anis 29a) ?Just as when the month of Av enters, we minimize our joy, so too when the month of Adar enters we increase our joy.? There is a dual implication from this statement. First, we know that both of these months contain a commemoration therein: the fast of the 9th of Av, one of the saddest days of the year; and, the holiday of Purim, one of the most joyous holidays. ??? ??? ????? ???? ????-????-????? ???"? Shabbos: Ta?am HaChaim Parashas Tetzaveh-Zachor-Purim 5769 The Bais HaMikdash, our source of holiness Introduction This week?s parasha is Tetzaveh, and we also read Parashas Zachor, where we are commanded to remember what Amalek did to us upon our exodus from Egypt. There is a tradition that the parasha of the week is associated with the extra Torah reading, so it behooves us to explore the association between the parasha of Tetzaveh, which discusses the, technorati.com
